One of the bigger challenges in rendering human features in miniature is the eyes. How do you recreate eyeballs? The really skilled figure modelers paint the details in, but what about us mere mortals?
Well, Archer Fine Transfers has come up with a sheet of waterslide decals that do a pretty fair job in several scales.
what you get
The set includes a sheet of 400 eyeballs in four scales from 54mm-150mm in five shades from blue to dark brown/black. That works out to 50 figures per.
The eyes are round, so it's a challenge to make them not look like the figure is astonished, scared or otherwise wide-eyed. But they're relatively easy to maneuver off the sheet, so you can adjust the look as you move forward by painting over any part that ends up outside the whites. I recommend cutting them as closely as possible: the transfer film is almost diaphanous, so silvering isn't a big issue, but if if you aren't careful, the decal will fold itself in half and spoil the effect.
The sheet is good value for money, since it comes with 50 pairs of eyeballs for four sizes of faces in the 54-150mm size range.
Even Archer is surprised at how well these sell. While they're far from perfect, they're a good solution for those who don't have the skill set or patience to paint in eyeballs (present company included).

Highs: Easy to work with. Makes painting eyes more uniform.Lows: Somewhat limited in application, as they tend to make the figure look shocked or surprised.Verdict: This is one of those "you'll have to make your own mind up" items.
